PRE_PRODUCTION: In filmmaking and video production, pre-production formally begins once a project has been greenlit. At this stage, finalizing preparations for production go into effect. Financing will generally be confirmed and many of the key elements such as principal cast members, director and cinematographer are set. By the end of pre-production, the screenplay is usually finalized and satisfactory to all the financiers and other stakeholders.
During pre-production, the script is broken down into individual scenes storyboards and all the locations, props, cast members, costumes, special effects and visual effects are identified. An extremely detailed schedule is produced and arrangements are made for the necessary elements to be available to the film-makers at the appropriate times. Sets are constructed, the crew is hired, financial arrangements are put in place and a start date for the beginning of principal photography is set. At some point in pre-production there will be a read-through of the script which is usually attended by all cast members with speaking parts, the director, all heads of departments, financiers, producers, and publicists.
In the music industry, pre-production is a process whereby a recording artist spends time creating and refining their musical ideas. The artist thus produces a song's demo recording, or rough draft, in order to pre-establish the song's creative premise. This reduces the time and money spent in expensive studios. The goal is to enter into the major recording phase of production with the basic and most promising ideas having been already established.
2nd Second Service
PRODUCTION: Art and service of creating content and delivering a finished video product. This can include production of television programs, television commercials, corporate videos, event videos, wedding videos and special-interest home videos. A video production can range in size. Examples include:
-
a one solo camera operator with a professional video camera in a single-camera setup (aka a "one-man band"),
-
a videographer with a sound person,
-
a multiple-camera setup shoot in a television studio, recording studio, dance studio, home studio set, location.
Shooting styles and techniques include:
-
using a tripod for a locked-down, stable shot;
-
hand-held for a larger frame of motion to attain more jittery camera angles or looser shots to depict natural movement
-
incorporating various camera angles such as the Dutch angle,Whip pan and Whip zoom.
-
on a jib or crane that smoothly soars to varying heights.
-
with a Steadicam for smooth movement as the camera operator incorporates moving cinematic techniques such as moving through rooms.
This is the process of creating video by capturing moving images (videography), and creating combinations and reductions of parts of this video in live production and post-production (video editing). In most cases the captured video will be recorded on the most current electronic media such as SD cards. In the past footage was captured on video tape, hard disk, or solid state storage. Video tape capture is now obsolete and solid state storage is reserved for just that, storage. It is now distributed digitally in formats such as the Moving Picture Experts Group format (.mpeg, .mpg, .m4p), QuickTime (.mov), Audio Video Interleave (.avi), and DivX (.avi, .divx). It is the equivalent of filmmaking, but with images recorded digitally instead of on film stock.
3rd Third Service
POST_PRODUCTION: Many different processes grouped under one name. These typically include:
-
Video editing the picture of a television program using an edit decision list (EDL)
-
Writing, (re)recording, and editing the soundtrack.
-
Adding visual special effects - mainly computer-generated imagery (CGI) and digital copy from which release prints will be made (although this may be made obsolete by digital-cinema technologies).
-
Sound design, sound effects, ADR, foley and music, culminating in a process known as sound re-recording or mixing with professional audio equipment.
-
Transfer of colour motion picture film to video or DPX with a telecine and color grading (correction) in a color suite.
The post-production phase of creating a film usually takes longer than the actual shooting of the film, and can take several weeks to complete because it includes the complete editing, colour correction and the addition of music and sound. The process of editing a movie is also seen as the second directing because through post-production it is possible to change the intention of the movie. Furthermore, through the use of color grading tools and the addition of music and sound, the atmosphere of the movie can be heavily influenced. For instance a blue-tinted movie is associated with a cold atmosphere and the choice of music and sound increases the effect of the shown scenes to the audience.
